Dr. Jerome F. Machamer is an economic geologist with more than 40 years of diverse mineral industry experience, covering more than 45 mineral commodities in more than 25 countries.
Dr. Machamer served with the United States Bureau of Mines from 1988 to 1990, during which time he was the specialist for Colombia and Mexico, and compiled a comprehensive review of the Mexican mineral industry which was subsequently published by that agency.
Prior to his government service, Dr. Machamer spent 19 years with the International and Resource Development Groups of the United States Steel Corporation. He undertook the petroleum industry analysis that was directly responsible for the acquisition of Marathon Oil by U.S. Steel in 1982, and outlined the management policies on which the success of the acquisition was based. He represented U.S. Steel on the boards of directors of several foreign mineral companies; served as Manager of Exploration-Canada for a subsidiary of U.S. Steel; negotiated the acquisition, sale, and lease of mineral properties in the United States and abroad; and served as technical advisor to affiliated and subsidiary companies outside of the United States. He also carried out the first geological evaluation of the giant Serra dos Carajas iron ore deposits in northern Brazil, and a comprehensive examination and review of world manganese deposits and markets, and other assignments as required.
Dr. Machamer's first employment in the mineral industry was as mine geologist with Cerro de Pasco Corporation in Casapalca, Peru. He has worked in the Pueblo Viejo gold district in the Dominican Republic; the Mesabi and Vermilion iron ranges of Minnesota; the phosphate fields of central Florida; and the giant Morenci copper district in Arizona. He has also completed assignments for the United States Bankruptcy Court, the United Nations' Department of Technical Cooperation for Development, and several private clients.
Mr. Machamer holds an undergraduate degree in geology from Cornell University, a Master of Science degree from McGill University, and a doctorate in geology from Pennsylvania State University. He is a fellow of the Geological Association of Canada; a member of the Society of Economic Geologists; the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration; the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy; and other professional organizations. He is also a member of the American Institute of Professional Geologists, and is registered as a professional geologist in Pennsylvania and South Carolina.
